Mathematics at Bushmead


At Bushmead School we know that all children can succeed in mathematics. We provide a quality and individualised mathematics education to all children by delivering consistently rich and stimulating lessons and following our children’s learning journeys closely. We plan intervention and additional support carefully in order to ensure that children of all abilities make rapid progress. We work closely with parents and carers to ensure that all children succeed and have the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy the subject as much as we do. 


Intent Statement


Maths is a means of explaining and making sense of our environment, a necessary tool in everyday life. It involves a range of interconnected concepts and skills through which the children can develop the qualities of curiosity, perseverance, confidence and enjoyment.


We offer the children intellectual challenge and excitement through practical tasks, exploration, investigation and problem solving. Learning takes place inside and outside the classroom and through other areas of the curriculum. Children are assessed at regular intervals to inform future planning. Throughout their time here at Bushmead children will have a range of experiences that will fully prepare them for the Key Stage 3 curriculum.

 


Through the 2021 National Curriculum we aim for the children to:

 

 

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, developing conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically and talk about their findings and learning using mathematical terms
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication and persevering in seeking solutions.


What Children will be taught


Year 1


Children will develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. They will work with numerals, words and the four operations and also work with practical resources.
Children will develop their ability to recognise, describe, draw, compare and sort different shapes and use the related vocabulary. They will use a range of measures to describe and compare different quantities such as length, mass, capacity/volume, time and money.

Year 2


By the end of year 2, children will know the number bonds to 20 and be precise in using and understanding place value, using practice to aid fluency.
Children will read and spell mathematical vocabulary, at a level consistent with their increasing word reading and spelling knowledge at key stage 1.

Year 3


Children will be increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. They will develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.


Children will develop their ability to solve a range of problems, including those with simple fractions and decimal place value. They will draw with increasing accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning so they can analyse shapes and their properties, and confidently describe the relationships between them. They will use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measure and number.

Year 4


By the end of year 4, children will have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table and show precision and fluency in their work.


Children will read and spell mathematical vocabulary correctly and confidently, using their growing word reading knowledge and their knowledge of spelling.

Year 5


Children will extend their understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers. They will make connections between multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio.


Children will be able to solve a wider range of problems, including increasingly complex properties of numbers and arithmetic, and problems demanding efficient written and mental methods of calculation. They will be introduced to the language of algebra as a means for solving a variety of problems.


Children will extend their knowledge in geometry and measures and consolidate and extend knowledge developed in number. They will classify shapes with increasingly complex geometric properties and learn the vocabulary they need to describe them.

Year 6


By the end of year 6, children will be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division, and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages.


Children will read, spell and pronounce mathematical vocabulary correctly.
