Reading books:
At Bushmead we believe that reading is one of the most important skills the children have to acquire. From the beginning, we encourage parents to become fully involved in helping their child to learn to read. The teaching of reading is focused around the Little Wandle phonics scheme and the associated levelled books. It is also supported by a wide range of other reading material both factual and fictional and we are fortunate to have a newly updated and well-stocked selection of books in the library that the children can visit regularly. Please ensure that you read with your child every week night and record this reading in their reading diary. These will be checked by a school adult every morning.
Homework Expectations In Year 2
- Regular reading - 5 times a week
- Spelling practise three times a week, for a weekly test (Friday)
- Times tables practise (for regular times tables tests at school)
Each child has their own login details for TT rockstars in their timetables books or reading diaries.
(The times table test will include 5 mixed questions from either the x2 table, x10 or x5 table. This may include missing number questions and division facts)
This test will be completed in the back of red spelling books.
Here are some timetables websites you can use at home...

Autumn Term Topic - To Infinity and Beyond!
Our Autumn Term topic is called 'To Infinity and Beyond'. This is an exciting and immersive topic where the children will learn all about Space and the planets. They will learn about the order of the planets in the solar system and different qualities that they have, as well as how astronauts are able to visit and explore space. As part of this topic, the children learn about famous astronauts, for example Neil Armstrong, and in DT they are lucky enough to create their very own rocket - ready to blast off into space!
Maths
In Autumn Term, Year 2 begin the year by learning about Place Value and what each number represents. They learn numbers up to 100 and how to place these on a number line and how to compare and order different numbers.
After this, the children move on to learning about Addition and Subtraction and how to add numbers up to 2 digits, they will become familiar with recognising number bonds and how to add up and subtract ones numbers and tens numbers.
The final topic in Autumn Term is Shape, where the children will spend time looking at both 2d and 3d shapes and recognising different qualities about these shapes. They will learn about using a line of symmetry and make patterns through using shapes.
The children are encouraged to practise times tables at home, and to use TTRockstars to focus on their 2, 5 and 10 times tables as these are the times tables that will be being focussed on throughout the year at school.
English
To link with our topic of Infinity and Beyond, in English we will be focussing on the text 'Look Up', written by Nathan Bryon which is about a child who dreams of becoming an astronaut. The children will enjoy immersing themselves in this story through making predictions, using adjectives and nouns to create expanded noun phrases to describe the characters and writing a book review. At the end of our English unit, the children will rewrite the ending of this story using all the features they have learnt about writing a narrative.
Later on in the term, the children will focus on the text 'The Man on the Moon' by Simon Bartram and write their own version of the story. At the end of the half term, Year 2 will be looking at different recipes and creating their own alien recipe to send off into space!
